I’m currently in the middle of a training block for a trail race in early May, and while it involves rocky, technical terrain and plenty of elevation, there’s a fun twist: ponies! Trail racing offers a thrilling way to experience the outdoors, but it requires a different training approach compared to road racing. From rugged terrain to steep climbs, here's five ways to prepare for the adventure ahead.



1. Understand the Terrain and Course Know what you're getting into by studying your race's terrain. Trail races often feature significant elevation changes, rocky paths, and technical surfaces like roots and mud. Be prepared for unexpected weather, too. Consider using trail shoes with a rugged sole for stability on these surfaces. 

2. Build Your Endurance with Long Runs Endurance is essential for trail races. Unlike road races, trail running demands more energy due to elevation and terrain variation. Increase your long run distances, focusing on time rather than speed, and try running on trails or uneven surfaces to build strength and stability. 

3. Focus on Hill Training Trail races often involve intense uphill and downhill sections. Incorporate hill repeats into your training to build strength, particularly in your quads and calves. Practice uphill running with a slight lean and focus on short strides. For downhill running, strengthen your quads to handle the impact and avoid overstriding. 

4. Train for Strength and Stability Trail running is a full-body workout. Strengthen your legs, core, and ankles with exercises like squats, lunges, planks, and calf raises. Stability exercises, such as balance work, will help prevent falls on rough terrain. 

5. Practice Running with a Pack (Hydration that is!) Many trail races require you to carry hydration and nutrition. Get used to running with a hydration pack or vest during long runs, and practice drinking and eating on the go so you're comfortable come race day. To add some fun to training sessions, run with your pack (friends!)
